Artist Research Assignment "Jim Campbell"

Artist Research assignment

The artist I chose for my research assignment is Jim Campbell. He was born in 1956 in Chicago Illinois and now works based in San Fransisco. He best known for LED light works. With a background in film most of his installations combine film, sound and mainly LED lights. The reason I chose to research Jim Campbell is because after searching for an artist I was astonished by some of his work. He really caught my attention with his use of lights. Not only does he work on installations for public spaces but he also does installations that are used in live performances. He has a great feeling for the use of LED lights to create emotion. Many of his works are still standing today all over the world from 30 foot installed sculptures to different smaller scale projects. He has installations in New York, San Fransisco, Hong Kong, Etc.

Jim Campbell’s use of LED lighting is absolutely incredible. One particular installation that I found my favorite is his work on the ICC building in Hong Kong. He lit up the entire building with LED lights and was able to generate an image using negative space of man swimming up and down the sides of the building. Seeing a video of this was incredible so I can’t even imagine what it would be like to see the real thing. It is pretty amazing that major cities allow an artist to install their creations on a full scale building and leave them there permanently. The illumination of lights on top of some of these buildings can really exhibit a feeling of emotion in people when they look up at the sky.
Jim also creates interactive video artwork with the goal to be to move away from the conventional computer screen "button pushing" interface and instead to move towards creating works that have a more intuitive level of interaction. Jim tried to “create installations that are less about a viewer dominating a work, and more about viewers participating in the developing personality of a work.”
